Has anyone got a climbing rose planted in a large pot. I'm wondering would a climbing rose do well in a pot rather than in the ground. On the ground below the wall I want to have a climbing rose it is covered with coloured stones and digging below that is very difficult - the ground is hard and rocky. Any advice?

I have one in a pot and the roots have now escaped through the bottom holes and rooted through the tarmac footpath. It is surprising how strong the roots are
I think if you can make a small hole for some decent soil and plant into that, the roots will make their own way after that. -
Thanks Thelma, - wow through tarmac - that is surprising. Because it is part of the drive below the coloured stones it is builders rubble but I think your point is a good one. If I persevere and make a hole the size of a large pot and fill this hole with soil I'm no worse off than using a pot. If the roots want to travel further then they can.
An afterthought - as my wall is the side of the house would a rose planted at the bottom of it grow and damage the foundations?Comment
