    Very shaded area

    I habe a small corner in my tiny garden with a wall, fence and large tree. The gap between the is approx 2'and the sun hardly ever hits it.
    What would be the best fruit to plant there?
    Hopefully something I could enjoy myself but if it's something that pulls a few birds in them that's even better.
    It'd need to be hardy as it'll be fighting the tree for water etc...
    Also, am I now too late to plant anything there or will it still take ok?

    There are some fruits you could try but they won't be as productive as if they had good sun :

    Morello cherry fan trained against the fence
    Currents (red/black/white)
    Blackberry

    If there is a large tree nearby you will need to mix in plenty of water retentive organic matter and keep on top of the watering as the tree will be absorbing large quantities of water and can make the soil around it bone dry.

        The big tree's roots are going to be a problem. They will suck the nearby soil of water and nutrients. The more you try to feed and water your little plants the more the big tree's roots will be tempted to grow close to your plants.

        I would suggest a raised bed with poor soil at the bottom to discourage the tree roots invading it, but with good soil in the upper several inches.
        Currants and alpine strawberries tolerate considerable shade. A raised bed might allow plants to get more sun than if they were lower down in deeper shade and might open up other options if the bed is high enough to get reasonable sunlight.

            The area really isn't big enough for pots or raised bed., I was thinking of building the soil up with a few bags of compost and topsoil.at the toughest point there is probably 12"between wall and tree trunk so I'm hoping something will just grow and sort of squeeze in.

              What about Apline strawberries (wild strawberries) - they are meant to be in semi shade at least i think. The strawbs are smaller but the taste is amazing. Im planting some under my apple tree this year for the same reason.....
