    What can I sow next and is in season.

    As the title says!!

    I'm looking after my 4 year neice and as she is a fussy eater like her aunt! I thought we can have a day out to garden centre and start a little veg patch for her.

    Any suggestions please.

    Salad leaves & what fun can be had for fussy eaters,get a salad leaf put a piece of cucumber inside,wrap it up like a little present & eat.

      I think my neice can handle a cucumber wrapped in salad! Salad leaves seem ok to do looks quite easy to sow and theres a speedy mix I think I read that can take 3 weeks before harvesting. But cucumber its not the right season, will that be a problem?

        You could see what plants they have in the garden centre,it is late to sow cucumber,but not too late for some carrot seeds? Purple haze is one of the varieties I've got & says you can sow in July.

          If you get some dwarf french beans or early peas you should get a crop before the frosts, the same for anything that can be used as baby leaf - rainbow chard is lovely and colourful although I'm not sure how a fussy child would do with the taste. Beetroots grow quickly and are quite sweet if roasted when small.

            It depends on your location, its too late for some veg in certain areas of the country, if you put your location on it would be a help.
            it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

              Thank you for some lovely suggestions.


              li ive in eastbourne near the coast and it can get verybreezy/windy.


              Found some spring onion bulbs in the shed so will try them. Trip to garden centre at weekend and happy days

                You could sow lettuce, Swiss chard, radish, beetroot the leaves can be used for salads, but you should sow or plant any veg. you want, the best way to find things that will grow at this time of year in your garden is to try them yourself, don't stick rigidly to what the seed packets say, they are only a guide and each garden has a micro climate of its own.
                it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

                  As you are on the south coast you might get away with some French beans, especially if we get a mild autumn. If it is very windy where you are I'd suggest some dwarf ones rather than climbers. Light levels could be more of a problem than temperature as the days shorten.

                    You can still sow kohl rabi, swedes for a late winter crop, and turnips for winter stews.

                      I was wondering about swede mothawk I usually sow earlier and finish up with a crop I won't really use n the summer months. Hmmmm.....I have dwarf beans too.....not that I'm ever really successful with them bu I could give them a go n the poly

                        I have brought some sutton seeds winter selection on the seed tape. Consists of swede turnip parsnips leeks etc. Love making veggie soup so this will encourage my neice to eat them maybe!!
                        We r going to do some sowing every weekend as that's when I see her and keep a little diary for her.

                          My neice popped over today and couldn't wait to get growing. It's hard to explain to a 4 year old that we have to prepare etc. Anyway gave in and we sowed in 3 -4 swedes as that was the only space I had at this time. When she goes shopping with her mum she calls them dolly head!!
                          I told her it will be a while before she sees them so let's hope she will be patient!

                            I am still sowing carrots in "tattie" soil, in tubs, before it gets chucked onto the veg raised beds,they seem to grow faster at this time or its just that you have too much going on to be watching them too closely..

                              If I sow kohlrabi now will it need protection when it gets colder? Would I pop into GH later?
