  • raspberries putting out lots of green growth, but hardly any flowers/frut

As above. These plants are a few years old and have been in this garden over 2 years now, and had been established at my old house for around 3 years too. So they're not young. Some of the new sprouting cains are over 5 foot high.

The ground is clay but I've dug in a lot of organic compost to make it more airy, and drainage is good.

Do raspberries just get less fruity with age, or could it be the soil/nutrients here are not good.

Any advice appreciated thanks! and if they're a lost cause.... I'll dig them out and put something different into the spaces.

as a separate aside note, there were annoying little micro sized caterpillar looking things devouring some of the lower leaves, but I've killed those all off now. I dont think they impacted any new flower tresses.

Are they autumn raspberries? Maybe they're not at the flowering stage yet?

Well if they are Summer fruiting rasps the new green growth won't have any fruit until next year.
Have you pruned and taken out the old canes. They could be a little over crowded?
I grow on clay and my Summer rasps can give a poor harvest if they get very dry.

Do you happen to know the variety & can you post a pic .

they sound like my raspberries, loads of fresh growth , 5-6ft canes = autumn fruiting around here, I don't expect my new canes to fruit for another 6/7 weeks yet, but they will then go on producing until the frosts..

Don't you see the flowers/fruits forming on them though Buffs?

depends on how fast they have grown and what stage they are at now, plenty of time yet, ours tend to grow slower due to less sun and cooler temps, but on the plus side the slow pace means that all the fruits get loads of time for the taste to develop properly, and rasps always taste amazing picked, washed and served up in less than an hour, it means that none of the sugars have started to turn to starch like shop bought fruit..it wont get any better than this...happy days..

Sounds like autumn fruiters, ours are only just having the odd ones,at first you think not many this year, then from nowhere out they pop, just out off interest, how do you prune them, all down to the ground or only the ones that had fruit on.
I know what to do,was just wondering how you doing yours,

I do the same as Buffs I think? My Autumn rasps ...I prune half down in Feb. The old canes will fruit in the Summer, the new shoots will fruit later, usually mid August through to the first frosts for me.

for a good few years now I have chopped out the fruited stems in nov/dec and tied in the unfruited stems and trim them to 5ft, they then seem to put out more side shoots and fruit in the following season, these canes fruit from the end of june/ start of july onwards, and just as these finish in august/sept, the new canes start to provide fruit, and that goes on til the frosts, giving 5-6 months fruiting and loads of fruit in the freezer. when cutting out the fruited stems they always look ragged, and the unfruited are looking fresh, so they are easy to tell apart. apart from lifting the escape committee offshoots, the trimming and tying in are all that is needed til you want to pick, a true lazy mans fruit...

I cut out the dead stems whenever I spot them - and they have to be dead enough to snap. Autumn & summer are mixed up but I have rasps for months too
Had a big bowl of them for breakfast

Mine are pittifully late this year and not much fruit, but my goodness the greenery is massive. It's their second year in this location and last year they were loaded with fruit and went on and on...

It could be a symptom of that long wet spring perhaps?

My Autumn fruiters are just starting to fruit but again nothing special, they havent moved for years.

why thin it out, mine are 4/5 deep all along the row and producing like mad on the tied in stems, filling a 2ltr ice cream tub every 3/4 days
