    Society Garlic

    Has anyone tried to grow 'Society Garlic'?

    After the last 2 years of completely ruined garlic crops for various reasons - rust, white onion rot and this year flood I thought I might give it a try.

    I've done some research - it comes from South Africa, isn't winter hardy and seems to behave like a perenial.

    I just wondered if anyone had any experience of it and where to purchase some.

    From what I understand this is a leaf crop rather than a bulb crop.

    I haven't got it and it seems that it's too late in the year to buy now.

    If it's garlicky leaves you're after then you could sow some ramsons (wild garlic) a shady spot in autumn /early spring or sow some garlic chives

      If it is not winter hardy how does it behave like a perenial
      Surely that would make it an annual.

        I think it is winter hardy in South Africa but obviously not over here in the UK.

        I think you could keep it through the winter in a frost free green house much like Aagapanthus and other such like plants.

        I'm sure I've seen it for sale through a well known online palnt firm but now can't find it in their catalogue.

        However I love a challenge and will keep looking!

          Suppliers listed on the RHS page. You can grow it from seed or plants but I can't see how it can be a substitute for garlic - any more than garlic chives, ransoms or Jack by the Hedge/Garlic Mustard is.
