  • Wasps.

I have a cottoneaster hedge which is absolutely swamped out with wasps. Is there anything I can spray on to make it distasteful to them?

I don't think there is anything you can use. If it is flowering now it is the nectar they are after and as soon as the flowers are over they will depart.

It never flowers. Just gets red berries on in winter. I wouldn't mind, but its right at the side of the car door and they tend to dislike me getting in and out of the car!

If it has berries then it flowers. They are insignificant but there never the less. One thing I found effective was a false wasp nest suspended above, in this case strawberries, worked.

Roitelet is correct here - there were small [probably] white flowers earlier in spring. Look out for them next year brown fingers.
People looking for shrubs attractive and beneficial to bees are often recommended to plant cotoneaster.

I read they don't like peppermint oil,mix with water & spray on in the evening? They won't like that,it could make them more annoyed than the opening & closing of the car door,be careful! You could try making a different area attractive to them with sugar water? Wear red, they won't be able to see you.

Park your car the other way round so that you get out on the side away from the hedge!
