Thinking I might need to buy a machete to keep things in check... Anyone got any advice about what to go for and where to purchase?

I take it the Allotment Committee weren't impressed by your plot, Baldy

I've just had a quick google and found this:
Machetes tested & in stock | Buy your Machete at knivesandtools.co.uk

It's a bit unsettling when you see how many one can buy!

            Blimey Stan:

"Extrema Ratio is known for the extremely solid building of its knives and machetes, which are intended for tactical use"
            http://www.knivesandtools.co.uk/en/p...tio-kreios.htm
Tactical use - well, maybe... I'm more strategic but at £341 I might have to give tactical a go

VC - there's quite a lot of 'dead wood' that needs clearing

Mrs Bee - thank you for your concern - I (may) have had a recent incident with a saw but I'm sure a machete will be far easier to handle...

Got a good one at my local farmers co-op. Always a bit worried having it in the car in case I get stopped though!

I'll have to check out the local 'cornish farmers' place - and then keep my allotment committee membership badge on at all times to keep the polis off my back

I collect old bayonets so transport this sort of stuff on a regular basis. It is perfectly legal to carry it from the place of purchase to your home, and then from home to the place of intended use, it would be a tad difficult to explain it down your trousers on a night out though.

I always make sure mine are bagged well enough to put them out of immediate use and carry them in the car boot or the back of the van, never on the passenger seat.

                        I use one of these

Its from Spear and Jackson and its called a Slashing blade. They say -

"Ideal for thinning, trimming and cleaning brush and thickets. The shallow curved blade of the slasher makes it useful for heavy duty cutting such as hedges and thicker material"

Its great. Being quite short I find it easy to use and its not to heavy either.

I mentioned to my Mrs that i might be getting a machete... after a long silence and an equally long stare she asked me if that meant i could get rid of the two mowers, short hedge trimmer, long hedge trimmer, chainsaw attachment for said long hedge trimmer, two strimmers, rotavator and chainsaw...

I just don't understand her sometimes!

Further to the above Bulldog make a short handled version of the slasher, which is a very nice bit of kit.

Thanks for the input - I think I might personally go for a Devon Bullhook - hand made in Devon
Morris Devon Bill Hook - £23.95 : Woodland Craft Supplies

and talk to the Committee about getting something like the S&J slasher - we can't agree on a petrol driven device so this might be the solution....
