  • Peas and carrots to sow now??

Afternoon!! This is not really turning out to be my year gardening-wise (slugs/rain/freak hail storms in June have made a bit of a mess of the veg) but I'm plugging away in the hopes of a miracle! Just wondering, as the title says, if there are any carrots and/or peas that I could sow now and still get something edible from this year? Current pea harvest looks great, but is full of pea moth maggots...every carrot I sowed has been slugged....hoping it's not too late for a last ditch attempt?
    Ta muchly!
If it ain't broke...fix it til it is!

I've just sowed some more dwarf peas (twinkle or bingo) & carrots purple haze in a pot with fine netting over to stop everything from eating them, you can sow these carrots throughout July so I'l be doing another big pot soon & dwarf peas are quick, mine took 86 days from date sowed to harvest date,so if you sow some on Monday they should be ready to start picking at the end of september.

You can sow "early" peas now - they mature faster than the maincrop ones. If you have problems with pea moth you can grow peas under insect mesh as they are parthenocarpic (they fertilize themselves). Grow them well away from the current pea crop as the pea moth pupates in the soil.

Slugs have been a dreadful problem this year and you may find that it is best to grow carrots in pots rather than in the ground. The small round varieties should be ready this year, larger ones may need to stand over winter. Check the packet to see if they are a hardy variety - Nantes Frubund Fastcrop, Eskimo and Marion are more cold tolerant than most.

Can anyone tell me for certain if mange tout (picked as on as viable and not allowed to pod up) escapes pea moth altogether? Desperate to know ta.

The RHS article on pea moth says that mange tout "should not become infested", although it doesn't really say why. https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=660. The moths lay eggs on the leaves and the caterpillars bore into the developing pods and eat the seeds.

Personally if I was worried I would put insect mesh or fleece over the plants before they start to flower, as I wouldn't fancy the risk of eating infested pods.
