Having read other past posts it appears a lot of us have very bitter tasting honey berries. I have a couple of bushes in my fruit cage and at home. The ones in cage are smothered in vile tasting fruit, ones at home which was uncovered were quite sweet but now bare as birds enjoyed too. I have tried searching sites for reasons so is there some clever person out there that has uncovered whether it is a soil or nutritional problem.

Don't grow 'em myself, but most articles, books and forum posts I have read all emphasised that the berries must be absolutely ripe to taste nice. There are un-named strains of the plant circulating in this country of very variable quality [ like Goji berries], you may have a poor variety. -
I've tried 3 varieties in 2 different sites and they've always tasted sharp to me, like a sharp blackberry. The berries are also quite small so yield isn't great compared to other soft fruit. I'm seriously considering getting rid of mine.
Calling the plant Honeyberry has about the same truth value as calling a mostly ice covered island 'Greenland', unfortunately.Comment

Depends a lot on the variety, I have 4 one of which isn't nice raw but makes a lovely ham.Comment

the male plant has lots of small very bitter berries, the female has larger berries but you must leave them till they are ripe, had about a kilo this year after about 4 years and managed to make some small pies a different flavour hard to describe , some people like them some don'tComment
