Where can I get something a bit like this -

This is, I'm told, a saw toothed picture hanger. Not what I want, but similar, to give you the idea. What I want needs to be deeper vertically and not necessarily saw-toothed, but that almost flat, flush shape.

I want to screw a pair onto some wood so I can then slot some L shaped brackets into it to support a light small shelf. Don't want to attach the brackets themselves, because I want to be able to remove the little shelf easily and leave the wood with no protruding pieces.

While I have a think, do you know anyone with some Meccano?

How about something like this, set at 90° so that the L brackets slot down between the upright and the plate

I've got loads of this stuff knocking about, I could cut you 2 small vertical lengths of support with a couple of brackets that you can remove when not required.

That's a kind offer BM, thanks, but I've managed to find these, which will do the job perfectly.

And after I'd made the post, looking at the picture hanger, I realised I could have put two together to give more depth. Doh.

Great, glad you found something. If for any reason it doesn't work you know where I am.

I know from experience that trying to find some thing like this depends on what it is called, and if you don't know you are stu££ed.

How about using 2 cable ties looped together?
