  • is it too late to earth up potatoes?

I've been a bit distracted in other areas of garden duties and have forgotten to earth up my dustbin potatoes.....what a nelly !
Can I still carefully earth up in mid June??
The bin is approx half full of compost, and the main crop potatoes have approx 18' of growth unearthed to container top and another 18" or so above the container !!!!! oops
Will earthing up now in mid June with this much foliage achieve anything or should I just leave well alone and suffer my resultant punishment with potatoless dinners for the ensuing autumn months???

If you can add a bit more soil without doing too much damage then do. The reason for earthing up is to stop the potatoes going green and encourage them to produce more. I don't think you will be potato less anyway.

Earth up gently, giving the dustbin a good shake to move the compost around the stems of the haulm. If nothing else it will help protect the haulm against wind damage.
