    How's your garlic doing?

    I pulled up my Extra Early Wight yesterday - most of them had completely died back. Out of 12 cloves I have 3 decent heads of garlic, and lots of the others were small and had soft wrappers & stems, with pink edges. Any hints as to what it is? I thought it might be something botrytis-y

    Tuscany Wight is still going strong, if a bit rusty.

    Not sure if I'll bother with garlic next year...

    I get white onion rot on mine or allium leaf miner.

    It may well be white onion rot if the bulbs were soft..or the stems had withered away.

      My Provence Wight is looking good, some of the stems are an inch in diameter. Rust is just starting to develop but on the whole they're looking strong. I won't be pulling them for a while yet.

        I gave up on garlic. I could never grow anything worth using. I draw the line at preparing minny, minny cloves of garlic.

          Mine are getting there... although they're a bit slanty from the wind! I'll be interested to see how big the bulbs can get in the hadopots!

            Still very green here so I've not looked. Looks healthy though.

            Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

            Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

              Doing well here, thickening up but no cloves yet. However my plot has not grown anything except runner beans and grass for about 7 years so no allium diseases yet showing their heads

                Above ground everything looks fine so fingers crossed, tips just starting to yellow.

                  My hardneck is just getting lovely scapes and the bulbs are huge...bigger than my clenched fist...but the whole crop is (as last year) smothered in rust.

                  Softneck is smaller, has rust but not as bad...and looks to be doing very nicely.

                  Garlic and spuds always do well on this plot...most other things seem to struggle but those two love it there.

                    Mine looks good on top but don't know what's going on underground. Leaves are starting to go yellow so might soon be time.
                    Dogs have masters, cats have slaves, and horses are just wonderful

                      Harvested mine today as the leaves have yellowed very quickly; pretty small heads and very rusty. But on the other hand this may be the only crop that the voles have left alone this year!!

                        I've got yellowing but they're having a feed of poo pellets and are just starting to produce scapes..another month to month and a half for me!
                        There's not much foliage but the bulbs are swelling nicely!

                        Think they are Solent Wight.. they're my own saved cloves and have been in since last year's harvest!

                          I had my solent wight for tea last night and it was lovely.

                            That's probably what I should be focusing on too with the bulbs I pulled up!

                            It does look a bit like onion white rot Scarlet, thanks. I'll wait to see what happens with the Tuscany Wight which is still in. That bed's going to be devoted to a second lot of saffron once the garlic's all out, so I guess it won't matter too much for the next 4 years.

                            Muddled, what do you do to get them that big???

                              It spreads Sparrow, don't put any stuff in the compost bin. Try not to move the soil around, don't grow anything from the allium family there for a long while. It's really upsetting when you pull everything up and it's rotting. If it is rot, use all the bulbs quickly or there will be nothing left in a few weeks.
