  • Heritage Seed Library...

    Hello hello

Was doing a little looking and reading on the internet last night and was wondering about the Heritage Seed Library... Has anyone joined? Was it worth the membership? Interesting as far as gaining heritage/different seeds? I am growing a few vegetables that are hybrids this year but was thinking about trying heritage only next year, do most people try this?

What is the Heritage Seed Library? | www.gardenorganic.org.uk

    Thank you

I'm a member, plus one of their Seed Guardians - I think there are a few others on here too. Most of my veg is open-pollinated. There are other places that would also be worth considering - Real Seeds for one.

You can see the kind of veg HSL offer in the yearly catalogue. 2016's is here Unless you catch them in a kind moment at a show, you'll have to join Garden Organic at the same time, which can make it pricey if all you're after are the seeds.

      Thank you Sparrow

I had glanced over the Real Seed website and will enjoy looking at the Catalogue you have put a link too...

I'm a member too and a large percentage of my bean and pea seeds in particular came from there originally and have been saved since. As said, it's not a cheap way to buy seeds and the election doesn't change that much year to year but I treat it more as a charitable donation which gives you free seeds.

Oh and Real Seeds are brilliant, amazing support and customer service too.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I have been a member but didn't renew for some reason, now that you have to join garden organic as well I definitely won't join. If you are a homegrower who saves seeds and shares them then you are already doing a lot of what the hsl aims to do. In regards to open pollinated seeds and heritage there are lots of places you can try.

Real seeds as already mentioned, brown envelope seeds, chilterns, beans and herbs and once you have been on here a little while longer you can join in on any of the circles or the virtual seed parcel.

I've not had the link sent to me yet, strange, normally had it by now as well.

This may or may not work - https://hsl.gardenorganic.org.uk/seedlist It requires a new login to be created.

The format's been changed so it's a bit more faffy to go through, but on the plus side it's a live ordering system, so you don't need to put second or third preferences in.

Nice to see that Kent Blue peas are back in.

I have made a conscious effort NOT to grow F1's but haven't joined the heritage seed library.

To be honest, most of the seeds in there are available elsewhere. Bar some of the more local varieties.

No probs. It's late out this year, because of the techie update to the system.

                            (sound familiar anyone..? )

                              Thanks Sparrow
Just had a quick run through and was surprised at how many of them I have or recognise from the VSP. Even Realseeds Bijou mangetout is in there - and I have saved lots of those over the years.
What did you grow for HSL, Sparrow?
