It's to early to lift yet. I lift mine end of June, early July from an Oct sowing. It will start splitting soon.

Mine planted in October has only just begun to swell. Loosen the soil round the plants and wait a while.

No, they split in the last stages of growth.

I thought that you waited for the leaves to start dieing back or is that only with onions?

I grow garlic that produces scapes: what I do is pull off the scapes (and use), wait three weeks and then lift.

Anybody else got any views? How do you know when to lift garlic that doesn't produce scapes?

With softneck garlic, I wait until about half the leaves have died, usually early July, then lift it, finish drying it off and plait it.

Hard neck garlic throws out the flower spikes, softneck doesn't although on both varieties the leaves will turn yellow and die off. Mine usually start to fall over....so far so good for me I might get garlic this year after losing all my crop last year to white onion rot.

My garlic hasn't done well this year, though I did leave it as long as possible in the ground, till leaves were dying back.

Anyway, I noticed this strange, quite heavy bulb, which hasn't split at all (it was autumn-planted Early Wight). Guessing I'll have to use this bulb straight away as I've peeled it now - but it does look peculiar.

At least it was easy to peel!

My garlic didn't split either, it was a disaster! The leaves had died back so I thought I had to pull it. My my guess is it doesn't continue to develop after the leaves have died back? Anyways, will use it soon, I use garlic in all my food, including salads, so no waste there.
