    Tomatoes

    Hi. I am looking for some advice.
    Somebody has told me that if you use too much tomato feed on your tomato plants, you can taste this in your tomatoes. Is this true as I have never really used much tomatoes feed? What I really wanted to know is if this would also apply when using groworganic fertilizer on cucumbers and tomatoes?

    I've never noticed any difference - but then I just follow the supplier's directions

      Was the person that told you also selling the grow organic fertiliser? I've never tasted anything other than tomato or heard it happen with any fertiliser,you have to stick to the recommended dosages so you don't overdose any plants,the plant & leaves will show problems if they're over fertilised. Does grow organic have a low potassium content compared with nitrogen? High nitrogen is good for starting the plants off but then tomatoes & cucumber need higher potassium when they're producing fruits. Leafy veg like high nitrogen feeds.

        Never heard that although I know over watering them reduces the flavour and over feeding them can lead to magnesium deficiency.

          Never heard of or experienced that one.

          I grow in containers so my feeding regime varies from other peeps I feed high nitrogen for green growth then change to high potash when the first truss sets fruit.

          Over feeding is pretty impossible in containers as between feeding you have to water thus diluting/flushing out the feed in the compost.

            Quick question! Can I feed tomatoes and chillis using pond water that has goldfish and koi in it, or even use pondwater on a daily basis?
            And would it do any good?

              It won't do them any harm. It'll have a bit of nitrate in it, which will help leafy growth. It's no substitute for a proper feed though!

                ^^^^Like Martin says yes I always fill my can from the pond just for ease but I still add a proper feed.

                  We'll just keep on with the comfrey and nettle stuff on the Patch ones (only thirteen now - bad winds knocked two out), and let them sort themselves out.

                  At home, we'll pop them a few jars of Tomorite, to make the shareholders happy!
