  • Cleverweed suppressant idea?... or barmy?

    Hello,

Our new garden is head height in weeds, mosty brambles, stingers, bind weed and rosehips etc.

Having slashed everythign down weve foudn a network of stone paths which if I can find any soil inbetween them woudl make a lovely vegetable garden.

BUT I cant keep up with the weed growth.

Weve been advidsed to sling old carpet down to kill the weeds and slow the re-growth but dotn have anywhere like enough.

Ive now acquired an old king sized duvet but ts too grubby to use. Woudl that be a good weed suppressant?

Or just a giant bed for rats?

    Thanks for any advice.

If the duvet is cotton and stuffed with feathers it will compost over time - that's good!
If its polyester stuffing/fluffy stuff it won't decompose but the cover might - so you'll be left with a load of fibres. I wouldn't use man made carpet for the same reason.
Can you get hold of some cardboard boxes - bike shops, white goods stores, have big ones. Cardboard's great for getting on top of weeds.

Carpet is a right pain and stuff grows through it/on it. But would be ok short term. Basically anything that excludes light will stop the weeds growing so vigourously while you tackle it bit by bit. Just don't leave it down so long it decomposes (unless completely compostable) or gets stuff growing through it.

Thankyou so much, thats excellent advice. That would have been a complete pain to get rid of if the weeds grew through it as it is the manmade fiber type. I hadnt considerd that (or about the carpet to be honest), Ill go hunt some cardboard.

          Thanks
