  • Can anyone tell me what this is?

A while ago I direct sowed carrots, parsnip and celeriac into my plot, marked out the lines with string and then waited ( and waited some more) for something to pop up.
In a neat line right where my drill/ string is these plants have appeared. The trouble is that I'm not sure sure they're what I wanted. Can anyone tell me if they resemble any type of carrot or celeriac you know? I wanted to check before I dig them up and put them into the compost bin!

The seedlings with 2 narrow strappy leaves could be carrots but I don't know what the bigger blueygreen leaves are.

I agree with VC, strappy leaves carrots and I think the bluey green ones weeds. They always grow faster than the crop. You also have some oxalis in there too, shamrock type leaves.

I agree the smaller ones look like carrot or parsnip seed leaves. The bigger ones with 3 leaflets are oxalis, which is a weed although edible (a relative of Oca which is oxalis tuberosa) - they have little bulblets which drop off easily when you pull or dig them out so they are quite hard to eradicate. The flowers are quite pretty though https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxalis

Are the bigger seedlings rocket, maybe?

Thanks guys. I will wait another week or so to watch the growth and then decide whether or not to pull them out.

Yes, it's much easier to identify seedlings once they have their first true leaves (in addition to the two seed leaves that dicotyledons make).

                name that weed time!

A while ago I posted that in amongst my carrot / parsnip rows there seemed to be another row of what could have been veg growing. I left them growing for a while just in case I had accidentally sown something rather wonderful / edible. I am absolutely no further on in figuring out what it could be so I have returned to ask for more suggestions! I still have this plant growing in a perfect line, in fact I have 2 almost straight lines growing where I thought I had planted veg seedlings. I pulled one up and have photographed it below. Its root smells kind of familiar, a bit radishy/mustardy but I haven't dared taste it just in case I keel over. Any ideas will be gratefully received!

I think its a Mayweed/chamomile or maybe Pineapple weed.
