  • Is it an Ash Tree?

Well, for a couple of years I have been growing two of what I thought were ash trees. I picked the seed from an actual ash tree myself. This weekend I was checking out the ash trees at my MiL's place and thought...I don't think I actually have been growing ash trees at all! What do you think?
Also, am I right that the second photo is an oak seedling? Or am I not very good at tree identification?!

The first two are definitely not ash trees. I wish I could tell you what they actually are, but I can't from that picture. It looks a bit like a goat willow though.

The second one does look like an oak. The leaf lobes are more deeply divided than the average, but the common oak is quite variable.

I'm puzzled how I got these goat willows. I definitely took the seeds from the ash...its a mystery which will never be solved. Will try again this Autumn...fingers crossed I get it right next time!

An ash tree seed has wings. They remind me of tadpoles - not that taddies have wings!

Yes we have three down in my MiL's place, that's where I got the seed.

Here's another for you. I've been thinking this was a....no you can tell me what you think first. It's not a good photo, I've just taken it and it's a bit windy so the photo is fuzzy.

Phew Wendy, thank you! That's what I planted, some Rowan berries. I have two growing so at least I got that right!

Agree with Wendy - thats a Rowan/Mountain Ash.
Loads of ash tree seedlings here - they're like weeds. Oak too.

Second one looks like a wild service tree' a type of Rowan.

Ash like weeds here too, can't get rid of the things!

Given that there's a rampant Ash disease spreading across the country...would it be very bad form to send the seedlings through the post?

Thanks everyone! VC, you couldn't send me some ash seedlings could you, then I'd know what they look like for future reference!

Yes not sure that would be a good idea muddled although I would love some! Just need to try again in the autumn.
