  • Is it too late to sow seeds - realistically why not?

Ive just weeded my beds and there are loads of areas with no seeds. I assume it was the weather as I was careful not to plant too deep. For the amount I planted there isnt enough to feed the family for a week!

I am on about carrots, beetroot, salads, spinach etc as my onions, beans and peas are well. Sweet peas look poor.

Seeing that I planted the beans a few weeks ago they are looking good.

Should I through caution to the wind and just do it as it is a late season this year.
    Cheers

Sow, sow and sow some more. Plenty of time.

Definitely time to sow carrots, beetroot and salads. Spinach doesn't like to be too hot, so sow it in the shade if you can otherwise it is likely to bolt.

        I hope not!

This weekend I'm sowing my runner beans direct and I'm also sowing lots of other stuff direct in the raised beds.

I sow beetroot every fortnight until sometime in August, French beans once a month until the end of July, peas once more in mid June and then again in September, lettuces every fortnight until about the end of October or the first frost, and carrots (with more optimism than expectation) right through to the end of August.
I tend to work on the principle that if the seed is getting a bit old it may as well not germinate in the ground as in the seed packet, and it might just give me something to eat...

I keep sowing as well. The only thing I do with beans, beetroot, lettuces (but not carrots) is that I sow in modules. My soil is pretty bad (clay) so sowing direct is always doubtful.
