For best results, either lightly to moderately prune them when they are leafless (to invigorate), or lightly to moderately shorten the new shoots <only the new shoots> in mid-July (to reduce vigour).

Pruning at other times, especially hard pruning, can have undesirable effects and may even kill the tree.

If the trees are strong and only just beginning to leaf out, they should tolerate some moderate pruning but do it quickly; all those reserves put into leaves haven't yet had a chance to repay the 'investment' by gathering a summer's worth of sunlight, so don't let the tree mobilise all its reserves only for you to literally hack the life out of it.
