  • peas & poles

I am setting up poles for my peas (kelvedon wonder) which are sat in my cold frame ready to plant. I read here and there about pea sticks, twiggy sticks snd netting. Saw a post on here (i think) from years ago about poles and twine. How heavy duty do I need for just one zig zag row of peas. The poles are 30cm intervales and twine I have placed is a fabric type not plastic. I have read of a few horror stories trying to get netting back down if used.

Do you think this will hold?

    Thank you

Peas won't climb on pols as they are tendril climbers. I use square mesh wire netting which will last several years. You could use the string you have to make a sort of mesh for them to climb or just string lengths horizontally between the poles about 4ins apart.

I use cane with strings tied along the row, just as you have done, but on both sides of the row, so they can't fall over.

Thank you for replies, Thelma just to check one row of peas with then two rows of sticks/string either side. How far apart do you place the two rows of poles from each other please ie gap for peas to grow....

Depends on how wide your pea sowing/planting trench was. I sow in a zig zag in a 6ins wide trench, so my canes are about 10ins apart across the row, but probably about 3 ft apart along the rows.
This shows broad beans, but it is how I do my pea strings.
