  • How to grow a fig?

    Hey folks,

This morning I bought a GORGEOUS 'ficus carica' Fig plant, I'm absolutely thrilled with it. I would like it to grow in my conservatory.

Is it possible to plant my fig in a pot?

What kind of soil conditions may it need?

Any other info would be greatly appreciated - Thanks so much

    xx

Pot is fine. They can take several years before they fruit though. I plant most of my plants in mcp with slow release fertilzer but everyone tends to have their own preferences. You might find being in a conservatory it gets a bit big and leafy so you might want to boot it outside. (I had that issue with a brown turkey fig)

you will find that john innes No 3 works best for figs, closer to its native soil, I would say an up to 18ins wide pot, although mine is outside (brown turkey), I give mine a feed, a handful of chicken manure pellets or some BFB each march, then as the fruit start to appear (june), I give a good soaking with tomato feed once a month. even with this really cold spring, my plant that sits against a southfacing wall, has loads of figs, some as big as conkers, so it looks like being a good year , and if I can do it here you will have no problems where you are, wherever that is, you don't say on your blog.... to increase the crop when your plant has matured a bit, break off all the stem tips in February and this will promote more figs to emerge...good luck ....

Thank you both, excellent help. Really appreciate it xx

One last question, how often should I be watering it? It's in a very hot/ sunny position in my conservatory

I would work on the tried and tested method of shoving a finger down into the compost and if it comes up with any "moist" bits of compost or there is colour on your finger (colour of the soil) then it doesn't need watering. when I water mine I drench it until the water comes out of the bottom, giving it a dribble will see it off in no time, indoors ,I reckon you will need to water about once a week , depending on the temp..
