  • Parsnips in loo rolls!!

I was just having a look around online and came across parsnip seeds being sown in toilet rolls! I have only sown parsnips once when I first got my allotment and that was straight into the ground. They kind of did alright but I would like to do better this year, so was wondering if anyone has tried this and if this method worked for you?
And also would this work with carrots??

I've tried sowing parsnips in loo rolls but needed double depth, i.e. Two joined as the roots will be out of the bottom of a single one before the plant shows. VERY-difficult to plant out. Better direct sown by station sowing and a small pinch of seed to each station, then thin to one plant.

I've just seen some previous posts about it and your right everyone says you have to be pretty quick about planting out when seedling appears as the root is already at bottom of loo roll! Kitchen roll on the other hand might give a bit more time. As I have so many seeds to use up before end of year I might have to have a little experiment

I plant them in loo rolls. As soon as i see them sprout they're out and in the plot... very simple and great results every time i've done it so far!

When the seed leaves appear the taproot is 2-3 inches long so if that's when you plant them out you're fine. If you wait till the first true leaves then you've waited too long and most likely the taproot will have grown out the bottom of a loo roll. So really it's down to when you want to plant out...

I've used loo rolls this year - planted out the ones with seed leaves & binned the ones with true leaves as the root was waving out of the bottom. So far, so good!
