  • Distance between berries

I'm going to be setting up my fruit and veg patch this weekend. I know it's a little late, but we only just completed the purchase of the property a month ago and have been away since then, so...

I have bought a black raspberry (black jewel) which looks interesting. I've read that it shouldn't be planted in the same vicinity as blackberries, red raspberries and strawberries, to prevent cross-contamination of nasties carried by aphids. But, how close is "too close"? I'm not short of space (we have 7 hectares in total), but would like to keep things as zoned as possible, so having my fruits all in a similar area.

    Thanks

My Raspberry rows are about 4 foot apart, enough room for me to walk down to pick the fruit without having to fight them off.

Excellent. So would the same 4ft be good for a distance between a row of raspberries and a fence of blackberries etc? I was dreading it was going to be 100ft or so

I would leave a bit more as Blackberries tend to be bushier. Say 6-8 ft.

Thanks for the post - I hadn't realised black raspberry plants are available over here, so that's v exciting

Bad news - the Stark Bros US website says a 75-100 ft buffer zone between black rasps and other kinds, here's a link if they work here: Bristol Black Raspberry - Raspberry Plants - Stark Bro's

Obv a 6 foot gap isn't going to be enough to keep the aphids away.

I bought mine from Longacre at Bagshot. If you're in Devon (clearly just an educated guess ) then that's a bit of a trek for you, but I'm sure you can get them closer.

Hmm, OK, 100ft is more of an issue. However, there's a nice wall I could plant it up against on the other side of the house and garden. Then I could keep everything else together on the original side. As long as regular rasps and blackberries are OK together, I can just keep the black rasps away.
