    I've just had a warning of a Smith Period Alert for blight...yup already!

    here....have a look at what is going on in your area....

    An interesting fact from that site....

    A potential "Achilles heel" for potato blight has been discovered following a collaboration between scientists in Dundee and China. They have identified a potato enzyme that, if removed, could prevent the fungal disease taking hold.

                Me too, plus for High Wycombe (I get alerts for my friend's plot). Only my first earlies are up though.

                    It's hard to see the benefit of being warned nowadays - it used to be so that you could spray them with a preventative, if you wanted to, of course

                    If mine got blight now, there would be nothing I could do - they've not been in long enough for a crop below ground - so all I could do is dig them up and plant something else.

                        Well I don't know about everybody else but its just stopped raining here, it started on Monday and rained all day yesterday. My home built (using a Raspberry Pi) temperature logger shows that its been warm enough all the way through the rain so I'm not surprised there's been a Smith's period. However, I don't know whether a Smith's period equals blight or whether the spores need to be triggered by something.
