  • cucumbers - pots or grow bags

I have 6 very nice looking cucumber seedlings - and now don't know what to do
Do they need a tall pot? I have read something about a 40cm pot - or can they grow in grow bags?
Do I need to stack them? Should they stay in the greenhouse?

    Help!
    Thanks

I had success growing them in flower buckets an 12" pots.

What type of cucumber are they? Ridge types (e.g Marketmore ) can be grown outside but other varieties may need the greenhouse.

Where in the world are you as there will be different answers if you're in Dorset than if you're on the Isles of Lewis

Edit - erm, would you be in Bristol then

I'd put them in pots as grow bags are a pain to water.

I'd put them in pots too & you could water from below to avoid water around the stem which causes stem rot. I grow a carman cucumber in my kitchen in a pot about 12" diameter & outside I've used bigger pots in the blow away, not much difference except they grow really well in the kitchen & I can look at it a lot.
        Edit because it's 10" tall & 10" wide.

I've also used Haxnicks patio planters which for the same floor space as a couple of pots hold considerably more compost - but I have to admit that the cucumbers I grew in them got a bit argy and kept trying to cosh me with their cuces.

I had Marketmore and Chinese Slangen in a 1 meter patio planter in my blow away and got sick of cucumbers mid season.

                    Many thanks guys
Pots it is then - I don't have much room and 6 plants so will try some outside and leave 3 inside and see how I get on. I wasn't really expecting them to do anything as the seeds were out of date by 3 years!

                    Do they need any support??

Jay-ell - actually I have moved!! But just to somerset

Pop three canes into each pot and make a wigwam and start tying them in they will send out tendrils and grab hold of anything as a support.

They'll also try and grow extra branches so you may want to pinch most of these off to focus the plants on growing flowers and fruit.

My mother had one in a pot on her back step which only gets a couple of hours sun and still got a couple of cucumbers.

They can be left unsupported but they'll sprawl all over the place and the slugs will munch on the cucumbers.

make sure you check whether you have indoor or outdoor varieties!
