  • Complete Beginner taking on a plot

After a nice little harvest last year with a few pepper, chillis, broccoli and loads of courgettes I have decided to take the plunge and go for an allotment plot this year. I am have reading up for the past month and I have a wide variety of seedlings going in my greenhouse.

I am hoping to get the plot within the next month and will be pretty much ready to get stuff in the ground straight away, I am not using raised beds this year that will be a job for next year along with building a shed and maybe a pond I just want to get things planted this year and not worry about the other bits. I am growing everythings broccolis, kale, sprouts, courgette, mangetout, herbs, onions, cabbages, also would like to plant some new potatoes but think I maybe too late for it.

Im looking to put my veg into four sections with grass paths down both sides and through the middle to separate veg beds and to make it easier to navigate round as its a big plot, any advice on how I should plant them i.e rows etc would be great as reading stuff on the interent and watching videos with all the allotment bloggers has just confused me as everyone does it differently so any advice would be great.

    cheers Matty

Hello Matty & welcome to the Jungle. I'll not say how I'm growing crops this year as it will confuse you even more..........you do what you feel comfortable with......Just an afterthought, have you got alternative ground if you don't get your plot?

      Hi bigmally

I have a little bit of room in my garden to do a few bits, There is multiple plots available just the town council where I am are just being so slow at sorting, worst comes I lost £20 on seed and compost I have will keep in a huge 7ft planter as well so gonna put a few bits in there, any others going to give away or sell at a car boot in june so I make back what I paid for it would be no real loss

        Hello Matty...welcome to the vine!

Do you know which plot will be yours and what kind of condition its in? That might be the deciding factor on how you lay it out...especially at first!

You can grow potatoes in sacks, in those big plastic trugs, old dustbins etc and I see no reason why you shouldn't bung a few in now!
Assuming, that is, you can find some...most shops will have sold out by now of proper seed potatoes so you might have to just plant some from the kitchen cupboard...still worth a go though!

Hi there. Good luck getting your plot! I got mine in October when I happened to see a notice on a site gate with a phone number. I rang them and they got it sorted. I think you may have better luck if you can approach anyone directly rather than waiting for the council to pull their thumb out.
