  • Brassica collars

Put these on my brassica just now.

Now I take it this is to stop the cabbage root fly laying it's eggs on the soil surface?

My question is though, what about the little hole where the brassica needs to pop through. Won't they be able to get at the soil through there.

First time I've used these so it's new to me.

I stopped using brassica collars I was just to rough and ended up decapitating my plants plus they seemed to be somewhere else for the slugs to hide under. Hope you do better than me Scoot.

I use them every year, the stem of the plant will grow and fill the hole, the material should be flexible enough to stop the collar damaging the plants.

The good new is I have never been attacked by root fly since I started using them...........hope that's not a case of famous last words lol.

Never used rigid collars, we use pieces of torn rhubarb leaf, held down with a sprinkle of soil.

I grow under enviromesh to protect against the butterflies so no need for collars either

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I intend to use collars on my garlic this season, hopefully it will help reduce/minimise my allium leaf miner problem
