  • Plants for partial shade

    Hello all,

For our July Allotment Inspiration pages, I'd like to know:
What veg would you advise planting in partial shade?

    Let me know your thoughts!

My Brussels are are always planted in partial shade, i get far better results from them than i do in full sun. In addition I plant lettuce in the shadow cast by my climbing beans.

Most of my veg are grown in full or partial shade. While you will get more yield of some of these in some sun I have grown all of the following successfully in fairly dense shade:
Carrots, parsnips, cabbage, broccoli, calabrese, kohl rabi, turnips, various oriental salads, lettuce, spinach, potatoes, leeks, onions (small), chives, chinese celery, corn salad, raspberries, blueberries, rhubarb, gooseberries. The brassicas in particular seem to prefer some shade, as does spinach which quickly bolts in hot sun.

I find the following grow fairly well in light shade (sun for probably half the day):
Courgettes, cucumbers, beetroot, peas, tomatoes, strawberries. All of these will give better results with more sun.

As some of the others have said, the best thing to put in shade is soft fruit. I find that soft fruit (blackcurrants and raspberries) that get less than half a day of sun (until ~11am) ripen at the same time as the full sun ones. After that top fruit. My cherries and plums get sun until ~11 am and some more after ~4 and do fine, though I don't have full sun ones for comparison. And only when you have 12 months of fruit and still shade left would I start thinking about which vegetables to put in the shade.
