  • Completely off any topic, Shakespeare Live from the BBC

    What a fantastic programme.

I am a philistine when it comes to Shakespeare but I'm really enjoying this. I went to a production of Macbeth a few years ago and walked out half way through, it could have been acted in Russian!

This is 'easy' to understand and most enjoyable, thanks Beeb.

I put it on but got bored after 15 mins. Reminded me too much of English Lit at school

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Did anyone read the story printed a few weeks back. There is now a theory that Will was not the author but the works were by a well educated woman who used him to get her works published.

Doesn't remind me of English Lit, cannot recall ever doing English Lit - it was a seperate subject when I was at school, and I certainly had zero interest in it - very likely less then zero. I can say I have never read any Shakespeare. Mind you read no Dickens either.

Never appealled to me in the slightest degree and I was able to avoid it all.

No one should ever study Shakespeare until they have seen the play on stage. Preferably by the RSC.

The beauty of Shakespeare is not in the studying of his work but hearing the rhythm and drama in his words. He was a writer of drama and his plays were meant to be seen.

My son was 10 when I took him to see his first Shakespeare play and he loved it then as still does now.

So many of the words and sayings that we use today were invented by the bard.

I have seen all bar a few of his plays done by the RSC and they are funny, uplifting, inspiring and many of the speeches make my spine tingle and my stomach flutter with pleasure.

And as to the many speculations that he did not write the plays but was a front for someone else, well 'A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

I thought that it was a most enjoy programme. Something for everyone.

Can't say I liked everything, could have done without the rapper, but I appreciate the artistry and skill in his performance.

Makes a change to find something to watch on a Saturday night, usually have to resort to catch up!

I could have done without the rapper and the opera.

I also though that some of the casting was a little off kilter but the rest was simply stunning and in parts my flesh was covered in goosebumps.

Simon Russel Beale and Gandalf were spell binding.
