  • Question about tomatoes/grow bags/planters

I'm now on planter plans version 6!

I now also want to make a planter that is long and narrow so I can slot in a grow bag lying on it's side. I also want to add trellis to it to give a bit of privacy to an open corner. It will be sited on a paved patio.

I'm now wondering if I can have two grow bags on their sides, one in front of the other and put tall toms in the rear grow bag and tumbler toms in the front one.

Would that work? Or would the tall toms cause an issue for the little ones in front?

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't do this. I've planted tumbling toms (I used Garden Pearl) in front of Shirley in a gro-bed, which is sort of the same idea. I think as long as the tall tomatoes were not on the south side of the tumblers and therefore producing large amounts of shade you should be fine.

Thanks Penellype. I'll give plan 6 a go I think.

Why don't you just tip the compost into your planter? Might make watering easier. You could get snails enjoying the shady damp space between the bags.

I would imagine if you can cut a pallet into 1 or 2 foot sections, a growbag should slot down the gap nicely.

I wanted to stick to grow bags this year as it's not certain how long I'm staying here so it would be much easier for me to pick up a grow bag / separate planter than have to shovel compost out of a planter into buckets if I ended up moving.

Not ideal unfortunately but for now it's a compromise that lets me at least grow something.

Grow them in pots - much easier to move if you need to.
