  • Too late for second early potatoes?

I've just discovered a tray of seed potatoes lurking in the back of the green house that I'd bought and forgotten about. I think they're called Anya, definitely second earlies. Is it too late to plant them?

Should be fine - First/Second/Main are grouped by how long they take to mature more than anything else.

I've planted 2nd earlies (Charlotte) as late as July and got new potatoes in December, although admittedly they were bought for the purpose. You should be absolutely fine planting them now - as has been said above the groupings are simply how long the potatoes take to mature and are not related to planting dates.

They will be fine,i got a lot chitted a few weeks ago,all ready to go out,you only have to notice how the little ones that get left behind behave, they known as host potatoes, they show up anytime during the growing season, usually in the wrong place for that years planting bed.

I'm only planting mine out today, I find any earlier is too risky round late frosts so I don't consider myself late

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I hope not! I haven't finished digging the bed for 1st or 2nd earliest yet... Admittedly we're about a month behind here: north-west Cumbria.

Should be ok...I've still got some Anya to go in and they are chitted just about right so I am going to plant them later today.

They are a lovely salad spud when steamed!

Definitely fine. I only planted mine last week and planted them later than now last year.

with the cold spring we have all had your planting at this time is probably a good thing, we had snow, sleet and hail yesterday, all in an hour so you may have picked the best time to start them off..

They'll be fine. At least you've missed last nights frost!
