  • It's happened again!

It's the same every year. My tommy seedlings shed their seed leaves really quickly just after the first true leaves show. I've tried watering differently, but nothing seems to make them hold on to them. My neighbours never seem to do this. In fact his sometimes still have them when he gives them their final potting on. It's really flummoxing.

    I wouldn't worry.
It doesn't matter if they shed their seed/cotyledon leaves - they've done their job. As long as the other leaves are growing ok they'll be fine.

Out of interest, are you sowing different varieties?

I've never even paid attention to whether the seed leaves are there or not! I wouldn't worry - they don't last long once the true leaves start coming through anyway as they get blocked of light

Did you notice any music playing in the background when you found them naked.

          That sounded like this:

Sorry VeggieChicken added that video at work in a rush before leaving to come home and didn't watch it all here's a benign link this time.

Three different varieties, but they are all doing the same. The true leaves are starting to look a bit ropey around the edges now as well.

Could you show them in a photo? Might be able to diagnose the problem with a picture

I reckon I have it sussed. The plants are on a window sill. If the sun comes out, they are very near the glass and could be getting some scorch. On a night, it may also be a bit cold for them. The problem is how to do something about it.

Mine are on a south-facing window too but I bring them further in to the room once it turns to dusk and the temperature starts to drop. Just got home from work at 9.20am and I've put them back onto the sunny windowsill.

They really don't like cold so perhaps bringing them into the room will help.
