  • Squashes & pumpkins close together?

All this talk in another thread with butternut squashes cross-pollinating each other and producing bitter/yucky-tasting crops had me thinking....

This year I am thinking about growing three squashes

    Butternut 'Hunter F1'
    Yellow Bush Scallop
    Uchiki Kuri

Would these cross pollinate each other? And if so, would it affect the taste of their produce this year or is it just the resulting seeds which become a mix-up?

Also growing a courgette 'Trombocino albenga' ....this shouldn't be affected, should it?

And pumpkins: I plan to grow Munchkins (bought seeds in January and plan to sow them in a fortnight's time) and have received a packet of another (larger) variety called Rouge vif d'Etampes - would these two cross-pollinate each other?

You can tell I'm new to all this veggie growing lark

The plants you are growing should be fine, it's the seeds that are crossed causing future unstable growings.

I always grow a mixed bag of squashes & courgettes. Don't worry about it, they'll be fine

How exciting squashes like they should be with a small amount of Franken-pump anticipation!

I am planning on trying Uchiki Kuri this year as well (in addition to my sunshine F1 I usually grow). Looking forward to seeing how it does in comparison.

Your squashes will be fine. Cross-pollination only affects subsequent generations in these plants with often times weird results.

Brilliant! I can now look forward to the coming growing season and not worry about weird pollination crosses and them tasting funny to my uneducated palate

Hahaha just like all these silly crosses of dog! I could have my own Squashidoodles Ooooh an Atlantic Giant pumpkin with one of my yellow Patty Pan Squashes to give me giant yellow flying saucer squashes!!! Bonkers or what!

*cough* I'll calm down now....I think these cold & flu tablets are affecting me
