It's an old wives tale, that failed miserably when I tried it many years ago.
Nowadays I let seedlings get quite big before I plant them out, and sprinkle lime in the planting hole. I also use a few club-root resistant varieties.

Oxalic acid is the active ingredient and it can work!

I have beaten clubroot on my plot by adopting good practices. At first i tried clubroot resistant brassicas but found them tasteless. They are usually based on kale as it has a more dense cell structure which doesn't suffer from the clubroot fungi as much.

My way of fighting it is loosely based on a true crop rotation. I rotate after each crop, not annually. Annual crop rotation gives the fungi a full year to do the damage whereas true crop rotation only gives the duration of the crop.

The affected areas on my plot also suffered badly from Onion white rot which has also diminished.
I practice no dig and just keep adding organic matter at every opportunity.

lol Thelma he's certainly not an old wife ! he has three allotments, two which where clear of clubroot and one that is on the far side of the site and which was badly infested ,he now grows brassica's on all three and swears by this method .
