  • Homemade seed mats

Has anyone ever made home made seed mats (seeds, kitchen roll and a flour/water paste)? Do they work/grow or is it just another one of those fabulous sounding pinterest ideas, but dont work in reality?

I hope this doesnt sound rude but why would anyone make home made seed tape?

Surely the advantage of seed tape is it saves time sowing? If you make the tape wouldnt it take far longer than just plonking the seeds in the ground?

Not if they're Parsnip on a windy day................................I did it as a pastime in the cold dark nights of Winter. Now it's paying dividends as I can just go down to a bed, lay a 1 foot square seed sheet, water & cover, job done.

So it does work then Big Mally? If it does, i was going to give it a go with carrot seed with my niece, was thinking if we got the spacings correct, we wouldnt need to thin them out & risk carrot-fly.

I am making the seed sheets because for me its not time that's the problem.

I have joint problems so cannot kneel and bending over is painful. I can sit at my table, warm and comfy indoors making the sheets for as long as I like, glass of wine in one hand and a movie on the laptop to watch ...and spend just a few seconds bending at the plot to 'sow' hundreds of seeds at the correct spacing. I can then water them from standing without fear of washing them away.

It worked for me but of course you have take into account the seed viability.

BM and muddled... What do you use to make your seed sheets? I absolutely love this idea and may utilise the 30 tiny pairs of hands I have at school to do this for our class growing project. Sowing tiny seeds with lots stompy children last year was absolute hell.
