Saw this and thought 'what a good idea' In the pic it is short strips of wool but one comment said they use their dog fur and the birds love it for their nests.

We used to put horse hair out (snaffled from the stable) on an upturned flowerpot.
The locals robins used to watch for it and swooped down before we'd even walked away...used to make daughter's day

What a good idea. I'll have to try that, perhaps it will stop the bluetits shredding and making off with the jute twine I tie my runner bean canes together with.

we do this the holder is fine if it is kept somewhere sheltered. we always but some of dog's brushings or hair cuttings loose in tree and some on a stump. We collect some sheep fleece bits from the bramble bushes too. We have lots of house sparrows with cosy nests.ElsieComment

I do something similar for old hanging basket fillers, wool though is a no-no, it splits and chicks can get really tangled up in it, legs, necks, wings, so easy when their young, its like fishing line.Last edited by jackarmy; 05-04-2016, 07:21 PM.Comment

Brilliant idea I always wondered what to do with the fluff from the tumble dryer. I've got loads of horse hair at the moment Bliss is shedding everywhere. And Larry the lamb loves being groomed too so there's always brushfulls of his wool tooDogs have masters, cats have slaves, and horses are just wonderfulComment

Natural stuff like hair should be ok. My much-missed cat Chilli was longhaired and I would save up her fur from January onwards and put it in one of those fat feeders and the birds loved it 
Sadly Lily and Nina, my current two, are short-haired so no fur available from grooming them

Dog hair here too. He's moulting like crazy right now so there are plenty pickings for the birds.
Never thought about the fluff from the tumble dryer, good idea.
Something small and black spent some time yesterday ripping bits off the cardboard I put down outside to try to smother the weeds. I swayed between being happy to share it with him to shouting 'I need that, get your own'.

Yesterday evening I found that the birds had pulled on some plastic Pea netting I had put on a shelf in the shed. It was next to a knot hole under the guttering and the birds had pulled through about 5". That must have been frustrating for them. I must find something more suitable in it's stead for the birds. There is an unused nest box nailed abot a foot away from the knot hole too.Comment

I also brush the dog for nesting material for the birds. I put it in an old peanut feeder. Hang it up next to the feeders.Comment
