  • Potatoes;

    Hi all!

    At last we have been able to attend at the lottie. after months of `inclement weather`-the polite description - Managed to get two or three bits of the ground dug / rotovated and will now begin the great journey of producing `food for the table`.
    Question...........Although having been a allotmenteer for perhaps 10 years I would still be pleased to have advice as to planting potatoes.I always chit them and don`t bother to remove the surplus sproutings from the seeds. So my question is....how many sprouts does one leave on the seed before planting ?

    Some years I have had brilliant crops but others I might as well gone to Waitrose for the produce [and before you start.....I have always ensured a good fertiliser-manure each year.]

    Something to dwell on but greatly appreciated for the advice.

    Different varieties give different yields. Have you always grown the same variety? I don't remove any sprouts because don't they grow back anyway? I've heard about rubbing all but two sprouts for bigger potatoes & if you rub none there will be smaller potatoes but maybe more? I cant see a big difference in yield,just the size of potatoes. If you rub off some sprouts doesn't the potato have to give more energy into regrowing the sprouts & then after you plant them,supposing they sprout a third & fourth shoot?
