  • Perpetual Cabbage?

In France I see people growing a perpetual cabbage but it seems to be mostly used to feed chickens.

Can anyone tell me which cabbage varieties can be grown like this for human consumption.

I think proteor may be one variety but am not certain.

    Thanks!

Taunton Deane & Daubenton’s Kale are perennials - but you need to get cuttings for these as they don't set many seeds.

If you do manage to get hold a cutting though, they take root everso easily.
I got one at a seed swap the other week...put it in water and had roots in four days.
It's now potted up and thriving.

Stick around, make your fifty posts in three months (forum rules for swapping) and I'll post you a cutting if you've not got hold of one by then.

Hello and welcome to the Forum
Are you living in France? If so can you scrounge one of these plants and try eating it yourself? You may find that its perfectly OK to eat - especially when young.
Usually, the lower leaves are tougher and ideal for chickens but the top, new growth is fine to eat.

This site might help although you may have to get your browser to translate Chou et kale ancien : Brassica - Plant ancien légume - Aromatiques.fr

They tend to send really lovely healthy plants (yes I have bought from them in the past even though I am in the UK )

Have got Taunton Deane Kale Does anyone know where can get Daubenton's or the varieg form Pannache.
Seems to be a bit of interest locally in growing seakale for winter forcing.

Totally and utterly fantastic site. I'm downloading the catalogue right now. Things I could never get here... Anyway, enough gibbering and drooling. Many thanks. I'll get back to work now...

Couve Galega is a Portuguese collard of similar habits - supposed to be perennial. Mine have just popped up out of the compost co I'll see.

Has anyone on here ever grown the Asturian tree cabbage they have on Real Seeds? Any views?

Jay-ell, can I ask where you got your seeds for Couve Galega? Are they in the compost because you didn't like them?

                            Snoop,

I got them from ebay - they're in the compost because the compost is in the pot I sowed them in.
