Every year I grow Alderman, last year I also tried Champion of England, but they didn't do as well for me. So sticking with just Alderman this year

Forgot to say because the pods grow fat, at first you think the peas are ready when they're not. You soon work out when they're at their best, meanwhile it gives you a good excuse for eating the first sweet tiny peas of the year

I grew a purple podded one the other year, they grew quite tall 6 feet (1.8m) or so.Comment

I don't grow peas anymore - can't be bothered with podding them so just use them for pea shoots. The few years I did grow them I had great results with "telephone" it's a really tall variety. Real seeds stock it.Comment

I grow telephone saving the seeds for the following year also a few purple podded ones to use as Mange tout in stir fries. but mostly the peas get eaten out in the garden.Location....East Midlands.Comment

Many of the more unusual peas are in packs of 10 so if you want a row of them, its not enough. Tell me which ones tempt you and I'll see what's in the pea-box!Comment

Collosal climbing is a victoriana nursery reselection of alderman. Giant stride is meant to climb but mine only got to about 1m last year however they were lovely peas they were still sweet even when they were huge like marrowfat peas.
Edit: If you want a tall variety rather than climbing and happy for a crop at once I vote for crown peas - and they are so pretty

Blauschokker is a purple podded tall variety but its a marrowfat pea not great as a fresh pea i.e salad or boiled. Also boddington is a tall pea although fine fresh (not great IMO) it is more a dried/ soup pea. I have found both crop really well and surprise surprise they are also in the VSP.

This year I'm growing the following tall peas - Pilot, Serpette Guilloteau, Telephone, Champion of England and Lord Leicester. I've grown all these before and they're all very good. Am surprised by the thumbs up for Alderman as I wasn't very impressed with them and find all the varieties listed far superior.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
