Several years ago I used this method on my plot with fantastic results, I was unaware at the time of what was actually going on but after a lot of reading & video watching, I've decided to go down the same route this year as I have a never ending supply of woodchips. I am not religious but am convinced the method does work & can now understand the principles. Does anyone else use this method?

I'm not paying to watch the video and anyway, the blurb uses the phrase 'god the creator' so many times that I know I won't be able to stomach an hour of it...
So can you give up a rough clue what it is? -

Have heard of it but never looked into it as what wood chip I can get hold of goes on my paths so none to spare
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

I think this looks good. Last year I bought some mulch/compost as a weed suppressant. It really worked had almost no weeds at all grow through it. I also bought some potting compost at the same time from the same place. Nearly killed all the plants I potted on init. This was all from the council green bin recycling. I'm a bit worried now to dig this mulch in. The wood chip idea sounds much better. Will have to see if I can find a local tree surgeon that I can get it from.Dogs have masters, cats have slaves, and horses are just wonderfulComment

When you get your hands on a new load of chips, put the old ones onto the beds rather than just covering them up with more chips.
It's lovely stuff once its been rotting for a year or 2

That does seem to be a common use for it Alison as it is for me. As I have a continued source of chips, my plan is to split it into 2 sorts. For arguments sake I will call them Brown & Green chips. The brown chips which is primarily wood will be used solely on the paths. The green chips which have leaves etc will be added to my leaf pile & used as a top dressing on the plants, the theory being that the greens will act as a feed when it rains & the wood will absorb the rain to be then released into the soil. As I say, I used this method 5 years ago purely as a weed suppressant & the results were brilliant. If it was all pine then I would assume it would make your soil acidic so maybe a tester would have to be used if that's all you can source. It's always worth remembering that the wood chips he uses in the original BacktoEden video have been used first in the chicken run, so have already started to rot down, and contain manure as a natural fertiliser.

Seems to run under a few names. So far read references to Eden, No-dig, Layering, lasagna, one other that I forget.
Wood chip appears to be the key item in Eden.
One person says it does not work on clay, after a couple of years things were bad/worse. Also I liked their statement of:
My conclusion is that while it may work for certain ground types or hippies, mankind would not have spend the countless energy over the centuries to till the ground for their crops if this was a better way.
Which I tend to find is something that we often forget, we do seem to get the idea that we are the ones that have just discovered growing vegetables for the first time in history.

As a fan of Forest gardening, mulching with woodchip sounds like a way to mimic the forest floor,. Nobody weeds or fertilises a wood but massive trees find enough nutrient to grow there.Originally posted by Kirk View PostComment

I'm not convinced that "normal" woodchips would break down enough in a single growing season to produce a bumper crop, but I'd definitely expect any form of mulch which has been used as animal bedding to have a better outcome as it's going to contain poop and pee which will both provide additional nutrients and accelerate the decomposition process.
A forest floor contains a lot of other dead stuff. Leaves and flowers break down quickly once they've fallen, not to mention all the insect and animal corpses (as well as pee and poop) which are constantly being added.Comment
