  • Free carpet offcuts

    hi all,

we've just had our hall, stairs, landing carpets replaced so I have a million offcuts available if anyone local wants any for their allotment.

If not they'll be going to the tip so just thought I'd offer!

Allotments don't usually allow carpets but Jonny may take them for his sheds.

I did think that BM, but wasn't sure how much it varies between allotments!

If there are no grapevine wombles who could use the carpet, you could try freecycle, freegle, trashnothing, streetlife etc

They are also useful as doormats, bathroom mats, hall runners, car footwell mats, car-boot liners, dog bed liners...

Much better than putting it on a lottie. The previous people to me has used it on paths, it was half decomposed when I got it and it was a nightmare to remove

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Am still removing layers of buried carpet. I've taken bag on bag to the tip. It's a nightmare to dig out.

Some people use it to suppress weeds on our site - I'm a bit wary of even that given what some of them might be sprayed with. Though there's never been a report conducted on contaminants leaching into soil that I'm aware of. (waits to be corrected..!)

Carpets are banned our our allotments although one couple seem to still be using them but I know our agreement says that you cannot use them. Besides alot of them contain man made fibers and won't rot down but when they get old are horrible to deal with, the hessian backed ones are even worse because as soon as they start to rot they fall apart.

I had buried carpet, buried chicken wire, buried bits of blowaway frames, buried chunks of wood, loads of buried half bricks. The carpet was a pain as it just kept falling to pieces and took ages to get it all up.

When I see the foam backed carpet crumbling and leeching into the soil, I often wonder what kind of petro chemicals goes into producing it and what effect it may have to the soil.

I would feel more comfortable knowing my plot had been sprayed with Round Up than have it covered in crumbling and rottng carpet.
At least Round Up has had some testing done on it.

I feel like I opened a can of worms!

Carpet has now gone - not to an allotment I will add, on my brothers garage floor.

Can a mod please close / remove the thread. Thanks

I'll close it but leave it here as its useful for others to know about carpets on plots.
I have carpet on my GH path - just been kneeling on it and its so much comfier than concrete.
                          Anyway - thread now Closed
