  • Chicken Prolapse

One of my old gals has prolapsed, its not that bad but she is quite red. I have pushed it all back in twice but it does not stay in.
Any advice before i take her to the vets when it reopens at 5pm

    Thanks

No advice I'm afraid other than pushing it back in but if it's not staying the vet maybe able to help.
I've heard that if it's happened once it's good to separate and not feed them for a couple of days (water and vit tablets offered only) so that their vent gets sometime to repair.
Though it's obviously to late in your hens case. Fingers crossed the vet will help.

      Thanks Scarlet,

I have been looking online and i have separated her and only put fresh water with her. I will not feed for a couple of days but she is screaming to go back with the others. Strange she was completely fine yesterday maybe a bit of a wet bum but nothing strange or out of the blue.
Will hold off to the vets until tomorrow just incase but not looking good

Let her scream better than the other hens pecking her. Better to let her go hungry than have to lay another egg tomorrow. Poor thing. It could have been an extra large egg, her age...fingers crossed.

It´s not too bad only just popping through but her bum area is red but it won't stay back in, i would hate the others to peck at her, can't imagine how painful that would be. I do not think she lays anyway, as i only ever get 1 old egg every other day from 4 old gals and they look like they are from the same chicken and one was laid whilst she was separated. She seems very stressed and i am not sure what to do, going to give it another go of pushing it back and just give time.
Strange thing is all advice of preventing i do, they have 1/2 acre fenced off for themselves so plenty of exercise, food and diet good, no fake lighting etc. Just one of those things i guess.

Not that it helps, just thought it might ease your mind that it is unlikely anything you have done. My Dads get spoilt rotten and have free reign of the garden but over the years he has had several with prolapse and there doesn't seem to have been any common cause

I think hybrids are more prone than traditional breeds as they lay most days.
                How's she doing Lisa?

One of mine prolapsed a few weeks ago. The vet put her to sleep as he said she would even peck at herself if she saw blood. She was fine one day, prolapsed the next. She wasn't laying although her comb had gone very red and she had started to stoop when I touched her so think she was about to.

Not good Scarlet i put her to sleep on Friday, the vet gave me an injection, which i had to put into her heart. Not nice but nicer than getting an axe. Then she went in my arms. I feel really sad about her, she was my favourite. But these things happen when you let them live out their lives, lost 2 this year.
