  • Raised lettuce bed

I know its not the best made ,but i found this pic on the web and it gave me the idea to create a salad bed that is raised up with sandpaper and copper tape around the bottom of the legs,Slug proof ?

It's a good idea but I would be inclined to make it a bit deeper. I've seen similar set ups on my allotment site used for strawberries in grow bags. Or have a look in local charity shops for cheap coffee tables and grow the salads in trough planters. I've grown salads in troughs on my garden table but I never thought of putting a deterrent round the legs. Those snails are determined and when they've had a munch they hide upside down under the table top. Little wotsits! I like the sandpaper idea.

I have experimented with bands of copper tape around the legs of blowaway greenhouse frames when I have been using the shelves for seedlings, and it works a treat. As long as all points of entry are covered and all surfaces (including undersides) are checked for inhabitants first, it should be good.

Looks good but it might dry out quickly. It would be good to sow in a different section every couple of weeks.
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

In the knowledge that I have found many a snail at the top of my seven foot bean poles I don't trust height as a deterrent!

Looks good Anton. A couple of points:
                Don't forget the drainage holes.
Is the base strong enough to take the weight of moist compost as it looks quite big.

                  Bigmally ,

Ive used an old pallet turned upside down with the middle crossbeam taken out ,its got cross timbers every 300mm and then a centre timber running along,Ill get a pic of the underside tomorrow but i think it will be okay.

Ive used two layers of weed suppressant that say allow water through ,do i still need to add drainage holes ?

Pour some water in & see what you think, If it drains slowly it may be ideal.
