  • Heating the greenhouse

Really sorry if I have asked this question before but I can't remember if I have nor can I find a post that says I have

What wattage heater would I need to use in a green house that is 17 feet by6 feet. I have found a few sites that tell you how to work it out but I so can't understand them

This doesn't look bad for the price, thermostatically controlled plus Oscillates. Good reviews as well.

Wow thanks big mallly. I have been looking at green house heaters and they cost hundreds of pounds. Been putting off asking OH if I can get one because of the price. I can get that one tomorrow .. I just want it to keep the greenhouse above 10 degrees when I finally put the seedlings in the green house.

That should be capable of keeping it frost free, just pick their brains when you go.

          Difficult without more info.

However I have assumed you height would be about 7ft that the GH is glazed with single glass. If the outside temp was minus 5'C and you wanted to keep inside at 10'C you would need approximately 3.5Kw. I see you in Lincolnshire if your GH is subject to strong winds you will have to up the wattage.

On word of warning that heater won't be approved for damp conditions take care when using water.

Yep and she lives in Lincolnshire next county to me. Last night was minus 3'C here and that's in the city could well be colder if she is in the countryside.

Belt and braces that's me if it gets down that low the heater will cope if not it don't matter as the thermostat will take care of that.

At that price with a 17ft long GH I would have two one at each end.

Thanks guys. I will certainly look into getting 2 I won't be using it straight away probably just from mid march onwards. I could probably even get to about April before I move the plants onto the green house. Just had a thought though. If I keep them indoors longer will I need to do a gradual transition into the green house. The same as hardening off?

I agree, if you are not using it till March/April, save your cash & buy some fleece.

I was just going to use it to prevent what happened last year All my seedlings went into shock or something because the just didn't grow for months it seems. My chillies were the same size at the end of April as they had been in March. Same with my toms.
