  • How do you organise your seeds?

    Hi Folks,

I organised my seeds A-Z and failed miserably at sowing at right times and succession sowing.

It struck me it would make more sense doing them in order of "weeks of the year". So organise by month, and then have "This Week" and "Next Week" ziplocs to move any seeds that are due for sowing. Do you thnk this will work, and has anyone perfected a foolproof system to help us forget folks?

Also, any recommendations for DIY storage containers appreciated :-)

    Thanks

Unfortunately different things work for different peeps. I used to do mine in a box in family groups then sowing times. It had two flaws, I would get packs that slipped underneath and I would struggle to find them and as the season went on I wouldn't keep it organised. I now have family groups in video cases which works well for me as I choose which families to do. I have done my peppers and dipped into toms. Really glad I got to pinch the idea off another grape

I rearrange my seed box so many times its unbelievable. Sometimes its sowing months then its family groups then its back to months.
I have found for me an easy way for me is to go through them every few weeks and put together the seeds in groups that I want to sow next. Then it gives me chance to get my self organised.

I throw all the packs in a big tub then pull them out like sweets

I have a very large biscuit tin and a half page per day diary.

The diary lets me make a note in the front what can be started when and the day to day pages help me remember when I am supposed to be sowing again.

This process can and does end up chaotic especially when I can't be bothered to keep the diary up to date.

I get some sort of sick pleasure from having them in a massive washing basket and I love tipping them out and playing with them, it's almost like I am in a store not knowing what there is

I go with monthly organisation, with busy months, e.g. April, split into early and late. I do have a separate box with "reserve" seeds which I'm not sowing this year. Usually about late August when the seed sales start, I put them all together and organise alphabetically so I can see what I have and what I need to buy. Then the next year's seeds go back in the monthly tin. For repeat showings I just move the packet back into the next month.

A-Z family groups, in a shoebox with a lettered cardboard divider...I had to do something at the start of January.

I do mine by month of the year, using moveable dividers in filing boxes. At the end of each month I redistribute, so at the end of Feb I will move any that say "Feb or March" to the March section and any that say "Jan or Feb" go back in the Jan section for next year if I think they will still be viable.

Within month I keep them roughly in categories, like all the brassicas together at the front, all the flowers together at the back, but I'm not very diligent about this bit.

Yep, I use this quality (street) system myself.

Nothing better when finding a pack of some 'different' type of veg seed that you forgot you bought really cheap the previous Autumn.

I have 3 boxes - with seeds ordered by family groups. Peas, beans & flowers in one, cucurbits toms peppers herbs & salads in another, everything else in the third. I have a spreadsheet with a list of what I am sowing and when, which I put together at the start of the year and keep to till about April when it all gets a bit ad hoc.
