  • Ash shaft for spade

Anyone know where i can get a replacement ash shaft for my Bulldog spade?

I snapped it a while ago and I'm lost without it! If I get a new one I'll look after it and keep it oiled rather than just left stuck in the ground at the allotment where it dried out!

Wasn't sure where to post this so MOD's please be my guest if you want to shift it.

Snadge, I know it's a horrible thought but you can probably buy a new spade cheaper than buying a shaft.

I was in a similar situation with my favourite forehammer recently. I was quoted nearly fifteeen quid for the shaft. I bought a new un. Sentimentality only goes so far

Good selection on Bulldogs own site not expensive either. They call them handles not shafts by the way.

I totally agree after having a look at handle prices! I only paid a tenner for whole kit and kaboodle so i'm loathe to pay a tenner for a handle. You could say i don't like being 'shafted'!

A lot of the time, you find the handles dont come with the taper on the end, or if they do..its not quite right, and needs whittling!
Add into that some spades, forks have a rivet that needs to be removed and a new one fitted.. its not as simple a job as you'd imagine!

My workplace is an agricultural machinery dealership, our workshops fit handles to forks etc.

Your looking at 30 mins labour @ £60 odd per hour, plus the handle, plus vat.. as you can imagine, they dont do many!
You've really got to have an attachment to that implement!

                ..the throw away society!

If I could get a hold of an ash branch locally that's what I'd do!

I don't think the Postie would be too keen on pushing half a tree through the letterbox though!

I could cut the branch up small so it would fit through the letterbox
