  • Pond Idea

Saw this and thought...................that's brilliant but I don't have the room for a big tyre like this so is it possible to have a go with a smaller tyre do you think?

That is brilliant. Don't see why it won't work with a smaller tyre. The principle would be the same. You could burt it a bit deeper so the sides were less steep

A small pond, especially if it is above ground at all, will heat up and cool down more rapidly than a larger one. Probably be ok if you aren't putting fish in it. I would use a bit of pond liner if I wanted it to last. Nice idea though.

I was thinking that a smaller tyre would be OK as a wild life water source - I don't want fish but would love a few frogs.

I am sure it would work but you would need to create some sort of ramp or the frogs won't be able to get out and could drown.

            Lovely idea, why not

It would be better for wildlife if it were buried deeper.

Any tyre place would gladly give you a used tyre, they have to pay to get rid of them.

The difficult bit would be cutting the wall off the top side.

What a great idea! If you put it in the shade,it won't warm up or evaporate so quickly. You could put a little oxygenating plant in there,my plant takes up half the pond, but it looks nice.

Looks a good idea, you'd need a UV stable liner though.

Looks good but I can't understand why you would need a tyre, just dig out the hole, remove any sharp objects, line with sand if you have any then put a liner in...............as I say, good idea but the tyre serves no purpose that I can think off...............unless of course you are planning on just sitting the tyre on the surface.

If its an ordinary car tyre, it wouldn't be very deep. It would probably be steel reinforced too, so, as Potty says, cutting out the sides might be a problem. Also, you may end up with bits of protruding wire which could puncture your liner.
                          Just saying..............

Maybe you could plant it up with a nice Water Lily.
As others said, If its not in full sun it may not evaporate too quickly.
Good luck and hope to see some pics when your project is complete.

BM - you have used a nasty swear word - dig

I might just have a go at a compromise by leaving the tyre on the surface, leave the edges on (they look difficult to remove without the right gadgets), let water take a liner inside and then secure the liner on the outside.

At least the frogs, hogs and birds could use it - with a hog ladder in place.
