Looks good BM, funnily enough I was thinking of a climbing rose for along a dividing fence. It's shady though and one site says this needs full sun another says it's shade loving?sigpicComment

They are lovely, I always recommend them to the customers who come in and would love roses but have kids and are scared of the thorns. They are always the first to sell out. I would love to have some myself one day when I can muster some energy to do the front yard.If you want to view paradise

A very old variety famed for their scent!

If we ever get a hot summer, make sure you water them well, as they tend to get mildew - but they're worth it for that first wonderful flush of flowers

Cheers Thelma, I've read somewhere that mildew can be a problem if grown against a wall. I have one grown from a cutting many years ago. It has moved house with me too. Wouldn't be without it, the scent is just glorious, and being thornless, no problem weeding under it or getting too close to it. It has been in a very sunny and rather dry south facing bed for many years, but it really wasn't completely happy there, so last summer I dug it up and put it against the fence of my north facing back garden. It has settled well and I'm hoping it will like the cooler and moister position.
It's a bit of a martyr to blackspot, but maybe the move will cure that too.
I looked it up before moving it to see if a shady spot would be OK, so I can give you a bit of its history.
It's a Bourbon rose, which was also known as "Charles Bonnet" and "Madame Gustave Bonnet", and was introduced to France in 1868 by a Dijon rose grower called Bizot, who named it after the wife of an amateur rose grower from Semur-en-Auxois.

I have one growing at the side of my grass at the back garden, it has been there for several years, and gets black spot some years, it is quite a bloom but never lasts long as the flower comes out about the time the school holidays start and then it gets hit with sticks, or footballs or kids pulling it to the side to get past it, I dont want to move it as eventualy the grandchildren will leave it alone and I will have the pleasure of seeing it grow along a fence.it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.
