Hello TL & welcome to the vine, can I ask what varieties the Onions & Tomatoes are & roughly where are you as this may determine answers you receive.

Good idea to grow your veg in pots since you are moving in April. You can move the pots with you

Have you bought onion seeds or are they sets (look like small onions?).
Bangor carrots wlll need a deep pot as the roots mustn't touch anything on the way down, or they will grow into strange shapes (called forking!). They're sown in February so no rush to sow those.
As Bigmallly says, we need to know the variety of tomato. Some may need staking or to be grown in a greenhouse.
Lots of questions, lots to learn, but an exciting time for you

Hello Terri and welcome to the vine. January is very early to be starting seeds, especially tomatoes! They will need warmth and plenty of light which we haven't got yet. You could wait till March to start these off and wouldn't have to worry too much about moving big pots to your new home in April. They are tender plants so dont do well in the cold and are generally kept indoors until your last frost date.

I am not trying to put you off but just a thought. With a house move in April will you have time to learn and nuture seedlings and plants? You could always pick up plants for this year and sow later crops for april, then throw everything into growing next year.

Hiya big mally, thank you for your reply for onions I have Red Baron for red onions and Bedfordshire champion for white onions, I have Shirley tomatoes, thank you for your help

Yes I have seeds- Red Baron and Bedfordshire champion, we have Shirley tomato seeds. We are based in Plymouth so in the south west of England

I used to have family in Saltash - fond memories of Plymouth - and its quite mild there

If you have your heart set on growing onions, its easier to do it from onion sets, rather than seed. I've given up trying to get a decent sized onion that way

Hello it is wonderful growing your own,good to get a couple of fruit trees too. If you've got some seed potatoes already,they need to sit on a windowsill,in a bright area to chit,egg boxes are good to sit them in,although you can sit them on a tray with paper underneath. They need a bright area,then you'll get strong healthy shoots rather than white spindly shoots. What are you growing them in containers? Or are you planting them once you're in your new house straight in the garden? I've bought seed potatoes in feb & left them chitting for 4 or 5 months,they were fine. Good luck.

Hello TL - welcome to the font of knowledge for all things garden related as well as daft as a brush general threads.

We moved in Nov to a waste land of a much smaller garden and I bought all my garlic with me in pots and washing up bowls.

We are still in planning and sorting stage at the moment as I have found out to my cost that rushing in with first ideas can be a problem - so my advice would be keep mulling plans over until you are sure where things are going.
